Translational research is an effort to build on basic scientific research to create novel pharmacological and surgical approaches in healthcare. Biomedical engineering focuses on bringing these principles into clinical practice. I will be working in the Efimov Laboratory for a year whilst also applying for residency in cardiac surgery. My current work in collaboration with the Mendelowitz Laboratory of Pharmacology and Physiology focuses on testing the novel hypothesis that activation of hypothalamic oxytocin neurons and the downstream parasympathetic network decreases the incidence of arrhythmias and cardiac dysfunction post LAD occlusion in rats. I am also working with the VA medical center to translate these principles into effective pharmacological treatment modules to improve outcomes following myocardial ischemia. We are also studying the mechanisms, in mice models, through which proinflammatory cytokines found in pancreatic cancer increase the incidence of atrial fibrillation and atrial fibrosis. Education:
