The work between cardiac surgery and biomedical engineering has a well known history of breakthroughs in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. I will be working in the Efimov Laboratory for 1 year; at the end of which I will be applying for a residency in cardiac surgery. Currently I am working with the Efimov team and the John Rogers team from Northwestern University developing a procedure to implant a wireless, flexible, and biodegradable pacer in rodents. I am also developing a technique to isolate a perfused segment of the right ventricle outflow tract and optically map it with the objective to accurately localize possible arrhythmogenic regions. In the future this could translate in the delivery of more precise and effective treatment in patients suffering from arrhythmias. Also I am working in a collaboration with GWU's Nanofabrication & Imaging Center and the VA medical center to analyze the effects of hyperglycemia in endothelial cells from the internal thoracic arteries and saphenous vein grafts at a subcelullar level.
